Muskegon County Inmate Lookup
The official starting point is the county's Locate an Inmate page. That page separates the most common custody systems: the county inmate lookup for adult jail custody, the Michigan Department of Corrections lookup for state prisoners, the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator for federal inmates, and VINELink for custody or release notifications. Starting there matters because search-engine results often mix private jail pages with official tools.
Muskegon County links its county lookup to the Zuercher public portal. The portal is the public county jail roster path for adult county custody. It is built for people held at the Muskegon County Jail before trial, serving local jail sentences, or held for another agency when the row shows that hold. It is not the right search for youth in juvenile detention, people already transferred to MDOC prison, federal prisoners, or immigration detainees unless the county row itself shows a temporary local hold.
The county's own inmate lookup page is shown in this Muskegon County source page, which places county, state, federal, and VINE options together.
That layout supports a search chain rather than a single database: use the county roster for jail custody, then move to MDOC, BOP, ICE, or VINE if the county row does not answer the custody question.
Use the Muskegon County Jail Roster
The Zuercher roster template inspected for Muskegon County provides a public search form with name, demographic, custody-date, and holding-agency filters. Live sample inmate rows were not retrieved during inspection because the portal configuration did not expose inmate API rows to the research pass. The public template still confirms the visible fields and search controls that can be described safely.
- Open the county Locate an Inmate page, then choose the County Inmate Lookup link so the search begins from the official county path.
- Search by Name first. If the name is common, narrow the Muskegon County inmate records search by race, sex, cell block, arrest date, held-for agency, custody date, or release date if those controls are available.
- Use Reset when a filter hides expected results. The inspected template includes an In Custody On date filter that can act like a custody-on-date search.
- Read the row as a custody record. Name, cell block, arrest date, held-for agency, release date, hold reasons, and the photo field are roster facts, not a full court case summary.
- If charges, bond, or a court date are not visible, check court records, call the jail or records line, or use a public-records request instead of assuming the roster is incomplete.
Note: A release date or outside-agency hold can change the meaning of a row, so confirm custody before travel, bond payment, or a visit.
Muskegon County Roster Search Fields
The Muskegon County jail roster template uses a compact search form. Some drop-down choices are loaded from the portal controls model, and the research pass could not retrieve every live option. The safe approach is to start broad, then narrow only when the result list is too large or when a date or holding agency is known.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name | Text | Unspecified | Free-text name search; the inspected template does not split first and last name. |
| Race | Dropdown | Optional | Loaded from portal controls, with an added All option before live choices. |
| Sex | Dropdown | Optional | Loaded from portal controls, with an added All option before live choices. |
| Cell Block | Dropdown | Optional | Reset value is all; use only when current housing is already known. |
| Arrest Date | Date | Optional | Single date filter tied to the custody event. |
| Held For Agency | Dropdown | Optional | Reset value is any; useful when another agency may be involved. |
| In Custody On | Date | Optional | Defaults to the current date in the template and may be limited by portal setting. |
| Release Date | Date | Optional | Single release-date filter shown in the same filter group. |
Muskegon County Inmate Record Fields
A Muskegon County inmate record in the public roster is a row-level jail record. It is useful for custody status, housing at the cell-block level, and visible hold information. It should not be treated as a complete criminal case file. The inspected template did not show booking number, charge list, bond amount, warrant number, or court date fields, so those should be verified through the court, jail records, or bond paperwork.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Mugshot | Booking image if available; a generic icon appears when no public image is present. |
| Name | The person listed on the public inmate row. |
| Race and Sex | Demographic values shown in the roster table. |
| DOB or Age | The portal setting controls whether a date of birth or age value appears. |
| Cell Block | Current jail housing at the cell-block level, not a detailed pod map. |
| Arrest Date | Date connected to the arrest or custody event. |
| Held For Agency | Agency responsible for the hold or custody reason when shown. |
| Release Date | Release date when entered on the row. |
| Hold Reasons | Text rendered below the main row that explains why the person is held. |
Muskegon County Booking Records
Booking starts after an arrest when a person is brought to the Muskegon County Jail or another proper facility. The research did not locate a county-published intake manual, but the county-specific record facts show what happens after intake: the jail creates custody data, classifies the person for housing, handles property, and may display a public roster row once information is entered. A booking record is different from a court record. Booking tracks jail intake and custody. The court record tracks charges filed and case events.
Muskegon County property rules add useful context for family members. Property releases are available Monday through Friday during the published morning and afternoon windows, or by command authorization. The county states that only keys within 72 hours of incarceration are considered for release. When a person is turned over to another agency or rides out to prison, only property acceptable to MDOC or the receiving agency travels with the person. Other property may be picked up by someone the inmate designates after a property release authorization, and personal property is held no longer than 15 days from jail release.
Muskegon County Inmate Records Contact
When the online jail roster does not show enough detail, the practical fallback is the jail or the Sheriff's Office records path. The adult jail and records offices sit in the same downtown government campus used by the courts and prosecutor, but they answer different questions. Jail administration handles facility questions. The Sheriff's Office and Records Division handle many sheriff records and public-records routing questions.

For a written request, use the county online FOIA form and select Sheriff's Office when asking for county jail booking or custody records. The research notes that city-police incident reports may need to go to the City of Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, Muskegon Township, or Norton Shores instead of the sheriff, even when the person was later booked into the county jail.
Muskegon County Jail and MDOC Records
County jail records and state prison records answer different questions. The Muskegon County jail roster is for adult county custody, such as people awaiting court, serving local jail time, or held on an agency hold shown in the roster. The MDOC OTIS search is for people under Michigan Department of Corrections supervision, including prisoners, parolees, probationers, some recent discharges, absconders, and interstate compact cases.
| Custody Type | Search Path | Record Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Adult county jail | Muskegon County Zuercher roster | Pretrial detainees, local sentenced jail inmates, and visible holds. |
| Secure juvenile detention | Family Court or facility contact | Juvenile detention records are more restricted than adult roster records. |
| Michigan state prison | MDOC OTIS | Sentenced MDOC prisoners and supervised offenders, not county jail-only inmates. |
| Federal prison | BOP Inmate Locator | Federal inmates from 1982 to present. |
| Immigration detention | ICE detainee locator | ICE or CBP custody, not the county jail roster unless locally booked. |
No official Muskegon County Sheriff mobile app with an app-only inmate roster or warrant feature was located in the research. A City of Muskegon Heights municipal app was found, but the store text did not show a jail roster, warrant search, or inmate lookup function.
Muskegon County Jail Visitation Records
Visitation rules matter when a roster search confirms current custody. Muskegon County Jail on-site visits are by appointment only, must be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead, and last 25 minutes. Visitors need valid government-issued identification, with current school-year photo ID allowed for visitors under 18. Visitors under 18 must be scheduled with an adult, and the public rules cap each visit at two adults and two children under 12.
The county's visitation policy page is the source for the on-site visit rules and dress code. It also warns that visitors are subject to search, late arrival can forfeit the visit, and improper conduct can end a visit or suspend future visits.
| Visit Type | Schedule / Length | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| On-site jail visit | Monday-Friday, 8:30-10:55 AM and 1:00-3:55 PM; 25 minutes | Appointment at least 24 hours ahead; federal holidays excluded; arrive 15 minutes early. |
| Video visitation | Scheduled through the county's video-visitation vendor path | County pages reference Smart Communications support and GTL helpdesk information, so check the county page before scheduling. |
The county visitation policy is shown in this official visitation source, including on-site windows and visitor rules.
The schedule connects directly to roster use: confirm the person is still in custody before making a visit appointment or traveling to the Hall of Justice campus.
Muskegon County Inmate Mail and Money
Muskegon County uses Smart Communications for MailGuard electronic mail services and identifies Smart Communications as the phone service provider. Effective April 21, 2026, inmate postal mail must be sent to Smart Communications / Muskegon County Jail, with the inmate name and number, PO Box 9135, Seminole, FL 33775-9135. Mail received at the facility after April 28, 2026, is returned to sender. Packages, Amazon deliveries, and third-party deliveries are not accepted for inmates.
Commissary and inmate account deposits are handled through eXpress Account online or by phone at 866-422-6833. The county's commissary page lists Monday-Friday service hours from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM and a $4.50 handling fee for commissary phone orders. Funds deposited into an inmate account become the inmate's property, so custody and identity should be checked before money is sent.
Note: The April 2026 MailGuard change means old facility mail habits can fail even when the roster confirms custody.
Muskegon County Inmate Record Facilities
Muskegon County has three detention facilities that matter for inmate-record routing. The adult jail is the roster facility. The juvenile detention center is a secure Family Division facility with more restricted records. The state prison is physically in Muskegon County but is run by MDOC and searched through OTIS, not the county jail roster.
- Muskegon County Jail - adult county jail for pretrial detainees, sentenced local jail inmates, and visible agency holds.
- Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center - secure juvenile detention under the 14th Circuit Court Family Division.
- Muskegon Correctional Facility - MDOC Level II state prison for sentenced adult male prisoners.
